Wander Weekly #10: Be Humble & Resilient

Wander Weekly is a weekly post on what I’m consuming at the moment.

Taylor Swift is releasing a new album and it’s basically 2014 again!!!

Are you Team 🐍? Team Kimye? Team I-really-couldn’t-care-less?

Fine. Here’s a short and sweet WW to kick off the weekend.

I don’t even mountain bike, but this is awesome.

I believe in inertia. Large or small, physical or psychological, it’s a wonderful and horrible thing. A body at rest will stay at rest, sometimes for years, and a person in a job they don’t like will stay in that job for years. We’ll stick with routines that are bad for us simply because they’re comfortable.

This is one of my favorite posts from Brendan Leonard’s blog, and it appeals to me today, in particular, because I re-read it after a run last night that I really didn’t feel like going on after a busy day at work. But I ran anyway, because as Brendan will tell you, inertia works in both directions.

Methodical planning works wonderfully under predictable and controllable conditions. But rarely are we operating in such conditions. More often than not we’re operating in complex and unstable environments, where immeasurable variables can, and do, interact and change in unimaginable ways.

  • Option B by Sheryl Sandberg and Adam Grant

Full disclosure, I haven’t read Lean In, but I just finished Sanberg’s book about building resilience after her husband tragically passed away in 2015 and boy, is it powerful. Like the above article, this book is all about coping with unexpected circumstances. Sandberg also acknowledges what she’s learned and grown from in the years since she wrote Lean In, which I thought was cool.
